Bishozi Women Culture Centre
The women in the villages are very talented at making baskets and other handicrafts in papyri and other natural materials. They also make beautiful clay pots and jars. There is a big interest in sewing, but no one owns a sewing machine. In 2006 work began on building a cultural center for women that would facilitate the cultivation of their talent. Forum Syd/SIDA partially funded the construction of The Women Culture Center in Bishozi.
Bishozi Women was entrusted to buy study material, tools and sewing machines that the members could use. The Women Culture Center has also simplified the cooperation for the project and for the women in the village. This has become a good meeting place under a roof when it’s too hot and sunny or raining outside. A midwife was also attached to the center so that the women have assistance during pregnancy and help with family planning as well. The Women Culture Center can also assist with HIV/Aids-information and hopefully also supply treatment in the future.
This was the start for a brick company driven by the women in Bishozi. The women knew how to construct bricks and these where used for the construction of the culture center. Matafari Brick Company has given a lot of people new knowledge and incomes in the village and is still a working company selling bricks for new constructions.
